On January 27, the International Commemoration Day is celebrated in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The UN General Assembly decided in 2005 to declare this day, bearing in mind that it was on January 27, 1945 that Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration and extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Located about 40 kilometers from Krakow, for years Auschwitz arrived not only Jews, but also prisoners of war, who were forced to work for the Hitler regime. In fact, at the entrance door, the main inscription reads: “Arbeit macht frei”, that is, “work makes you free“.

In 1979, the place that was the tomb of many innocents, was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and, as explained by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, when naming the International Day, it is ” an important reminder of the universal teachings of the Holocaust, unparalleled atrocity that we can not simply relegate to the past and forget. “

Six million Jewish men, women and children perished in the Holocaust. Seventy years later, the States share the collective responsibility to address the still alive traumas, commemorate the facts, take care of the historical places to keep the memory and promote education, documentation and research.

The International Day of 2019 has as its theme “Remembrance of the Holocaust: Demand and defend your human rights”, which highlights the constant work to remember the Holocaust and demand that human rights are always fulfilled. From Toldos Guardamar we echo this issue, always in favor of human rights, and we share that desire that to remember is to be sensitized so that these events never happen again.
