Since 1992, the International Society for Animal Rights, better known as ISAR for its acronym in English, has promoted the celebration of the International Day of the Homeless Animal, whose main objective is to provide a solution to the problem of overpopulation of pets found in the street. It is celebrated on August 17.
Among the main activities carried out by organizations around the world that ensure the care and rights of animals, are the following: adoption of pets, vaccination, neutering and sterilization days, talks in schools and veterinary clinics, distribution of pamphlets, radio shows, exhibitions, charitable drives and animal blessings.
Main causes that motivate the abandonment of a pet.
- Financial problems: Many people adopt or acquire a pet, without considering the level of expense and maintenance that owning the animal entails. A pet is as demanding as a baby, animals need to be fed, vaccinated, bathed dewormed, in addition to any other type of treatment or exclusive care of their breed or species.
- Lack of birth control: This occurs mainly in those owners who have a female of any species, either cat or bitch. The problem here is the owner’s lack of care and caution. If the pet is not acquired for reproductive purposes, the best thing to do is wait for the second heat to sterilize it and thus avoid the arrival of unexpected litters.
- Ignorance of the animal: In this case, the trigger for abandonment is not the expenses involved in having it, but how demanding the animal becomes in its daily routine or in its habits. For example, buying an angora cat for a child, only to discover that the little one is allergic to cat hair.
We must be aware that a pet is not a toy or a whim, it is a great responsibility and we must receive it in our homes as part of our family. And the family cannot be abandoned!
