Because the ocean is our lung.

On December 5, 2008, the General Assembly of the United Nations, for initiative of Canada, resolved that from 2009 on June 8 would be the Day World of the Oceans.

The oceans are the heart of our planet. In the same way that the heart beats cause blood to circulate throughout the body, the oceans connect people from all over the world, regardless of where they live. They also regulate the climate, feed millions of people, produce oxygen, are the habitat of a great variety of living beings and provide us with medicines and many more resources. To ensure the health of our communities and of future generations, it is imperative that we take care of the oceans with the same intensity that they take care of us.

Data on the importance of the oceans.

  • The oceans cover more than 70% of the surface of the globe. Only 1% of the ocean surface is protected.
  • Between 50 and 80% of life on Earth is under the surface of the ocean, which makes up 90% of the planet’s habitable space. Less than 10% of this space has been explored so far by man.
  • A set of tiny marine organisms called phytoplankton produce half of the oxygen in the atmosphere through photosynthesis.
  • The oceans contain 96% of all the water on Earth. The rest is fresh water that is found in the form of rivers, lakes and ice.
  • The ocean annually absorbs about 25% of the CO2 that is added to the atmosphere due to human activity, thus reducing the impact of this greenhouse gas on the climate.
  • The set of coastal ecosystems that act as carbon sinks, such as mangroves, salt marshes and underwater meadows, can contain a quantity of carbon five times higher than that of tropical forests.
  • Seafood is the main source of protein for at least one in four people in the world.

In Toldos Guardamar we support all the initiatives that are carried out to stop the deterioration of this fundamental habitat for all life on Earth. Beginning with the elimination of single-use plastic.
