On May 24 the European Day of Natural Parks is celebrated in commemoration of the declaration of the first national parks in Europe, specifically in Sweden, in 1909. It is the Europarc federation that promotes and organizes it, with a total of 38 countries, among them Spain.
Global change is a complex process that includes climate change along with other drivers such as increased CO2, pollution at all levels, invasive species and changes in land use. These evidences of change have triggered different actions in national and international policies, including nature conservation policies in which protected areas play a key role in conserving the territory.
Protected areas in Europe play a fundamental role in nature conservation, preserve our natural resources and are nuclei of biodiversity. Parks are our life support system.
These protected areas are essential for the livelihood of millions of European citizens
-They help to face the effects of climate change and minimize its impacts.
-The parks are the ideal scenarios to maintain and improve the genetic diversity of all the animal and plant species that coexist in them.
-They can help minimize our footprint in our environment.
-They promote sustainability in our local communities.
In Spain there are 15 national parks, 151 natural parks, 290 nature reserves, as well as other legal figures used in the different autonomous communities, up to a total of 1,958 protected natural areas.
Toldos Guardamar wishes to raise awareness of the importance of all these places as a means of preserving Nature in its most authentic form. This year, due to the pandemic worldwide, it would be the ideal time to visit our natural parks and discover them as a vacation destination, but always taking care of them and enjoying the incredible ecosystems that we can discover in them.
What better gift than feeling part of nature itself!
