World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5 to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the ILO / UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers (1966). This Recommendation establishes benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teaching staff and standards for their initial training and further development, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
In 2020, World Teachers’ Day will pay tribute to all teachers under the theme “Teachers: leading in crisis situations, reinventing the future.” This Day offers the opportunity to honor the teaching profession around the world, take stock of achievements and draw attention to the role of teachers, who are at the center of efforts to achieve the global goal of let no one be left behind.
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the already numerous challenges faced by education systems across the world. It is not an exaggeration if we affirm that the world is at a crossroads, and that now more than ever, we must work with teachers to protect the right to education and guide it in the evolving context that has caused the pandemic.
Perhaps it is a good litmus test to implement alternative teaching methods, such as the use of technology so that the new generations do not put aside everything they have achieved in recent years. It is a great challenge, we must open schools minimizing risk, but being aware of everything that is at stake, and that no one should be left behind.
Toldos Guardamar wishes to honor all the teachers who continue with the intact illusion of teaching our children in these difficult times.
