Summer is over and holidays are a thing of the past. Everyone goes back to their jobs, to their studies, to their obligations, and the tourist areas are emptied. The time of the great journeys has passed…, but perhaps another time has arrived: that of the small getaways by the mountain of Alicante, all to enjoy a couple of days of the nature and not to let ourselves be defeated by the routine.
Alicante is a province that moves between the sea and the mountains. In the summer months its beaches are its main attraction, but we must not forget that they are also in the area mountainous places of extraordinary beauty, which can be visited in just one or two days and are perfect for a weekend getaway:
Algar Fountains
The Algar fountains, in the Alicante town of Callosa d’en Sarrià, 16km from Benidorm, are a network of waterfalls, canals and natural swimming pools in which, apart from enjoying the wonderful views, you can bathe. You have to pay the entrance fee, but it is not very high (5€ in summer and 4€ in winter). There is a camping area, picnic areas and various restaurants in the area.
Sax
Sax is one of the most beautiful municipalities in the province, with an old town of remarkable beauty and several important tourist attractions, including the castle of Sax and the Colony of Santa Eulalia, an experiment in utopian socialism of the nineteenth century that can be visited.
Guadalest Castle
Castell de Guadalest is recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, and offers its visitors spectacular views of the mountains surrounding the town. It also has a castle from the Muslim period and a 17th century house, the Orduña House, which is kept as a historical museum.
Canelobre Caves
The caves of Canelobre, in Busot, offer a unique experience in Alicante: a visit to a karstic cave at an altitude of more than 700 metres, with part of its galleries ready to be visited, permission for speleology in other areas and the highest natural dome on the Iberian Peninsula of more than 70 metres. The acoustics of the caves are sometimes used for musical performances, a unique experience that you should not miss.
