In Spain, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May, which this year falls on May 3. But this is not the case in all countries.
The origins of this celebration come from ancient times, from the Egyptian civilization, where the Goddess Isis, known as the “Great Mother” was the object of worship and tribute. In ancient Greece she was the Goddess Rea, mother of the Gods of Olympus, and in the Roman Empire the Goddess Cybele, the Mother Goddess, was worshiped.
Catholicism in Europe transformed these celebrations in honor of the mother goddesses and transferred it to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus of Nazareth. On December 8, 1954, Pope Pius IX declared that on this date Mother’s Day would be celebrated in honor of the Immaculate Conception. In fact, in some countries Mother’s Day is still celebrated on December 8.
In the USA, two influential women fought for the recognition of Mother’s Day. That tireless active fight caused the American president Wilson Woodrow to officially declare in 1914 that Mother’s Day would be celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
In Spain at that time Mother’s Day was celebrated on December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception. It was as a result of the official statement of Wilson Woodrow that a distinction of celebrations was raised: on the one hand, the Immaculate Conception and on the other, Mother’s Day as a celebration of motherhood. And it is, from 1965, when it moved to the first Sunday of May, as we know it today.
There is much to thank and celebrate for our mothers, but now, more than ever, Toldos Guardamar knows the importance of having them close, of doing many things with and for them, who deserve everything every day.
And if due to the current situation you cannot have her by your side and embrace her as she deserves; there are technological means to be in contact not only that day but any day of the year. She gave you life … Make her happy with thousands of kisses and virtual hugs.
#Happy Mother’s Day.
