The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as International Education Day, celebrating the role that education plays in peace and development.
Without quality, inclusive and equitable education for all and opportunities for lifelong learning, countries will not achieve gender equality or break the cycle of poverty that leaves millions of children, youth and adults behind.
Currently, 262 million children and young people are still out of school, 617 million children and adolescents cannot read or handle the rudiments of calculation; Less than 40 per cent of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete secondary school and some 4 million refugee children and youth are unable to attend school. The right to education of these people is affected and that is unacceptable.
We don’t have to go that far to do our bit. Right here in Spain there are still things to improve, such as school dropouts or “no schooling” of a certain marginalized sector. Toldos Guardamar collaborates with Grupo 07 because Spain continues to be one of the countries in Europe that leaves more children behind with regard to education. More support is needed in this essential early stage of education. We also collaborate with Unicef, because whether the classes are held in schools, in tents or under a tree, all girls and boys should have the opportunity to learn and develop their potential. Education is a right, it should’nt be just a dream.
Toldos Guardamar stands in solidarity so that all children from all over the world have the right to a decent education. More education = More quality of life.
