The Three Kings Day is celebrated on Wednesday, January 6. It is a very significant event in Christian countries and marks the last day of the Christmas holidays. At night the kings bring gifts to the houses to reward the children who have behaved well during the year.
However, this year will be different due to the complicated health situation in which we find ourselves. There will be no traditional parade the night before, and the wish that we will all ask is for this nightmare to pass as soon as possible, to regain our normality.
On this day the adoration of the child Jesus by the kings is remembered. It is a fundamental commemoration for the Catholic liturgy, known as “The Epiphany.” The “Magi from the East” are named in the Gospels simply as “magi.” Matthew mentioned them saying that they were looking in the heavens for the star of Bethlehem. They symbolize the worship of the Lord and the early years of evangelization.
In reality little else is known about them. We do not know their real names, or that they were kings. There are stories that speak of four magicians, even that there were twelve. However, it is accepted that the gifts presented in the manger were three. The term “magicians” was also associated with sorcerers, men of science and also wise men at the time.
In the morning the children wake up early to open the gifts with the illusion of living something magical. Many countries also have a habit of eating the typical Roscón de Reyes (Rosca de Reyes), a sweet that usually contains surprises inside. The day is spent as a family, opening gifts and eating together. The afternoon is somewhat sad, the Christmas decorations begin to be disassembled and kept until the following year.
At Toldos Guardamar we want to stay with this more positive magical aspect, in which all of us, young and old, look forward to the coming year with optimism, hope and that any wish can be fulfilled.
