According to the World Health Assembly, the highest organ of the WHO, declared June 14 of each year as World Blood Donor Day to commemorate the date of birth of Karl Landsteiner (1868 – 1943), the Austrian pathologist and biologist who discovered ABO blood groups and earned him the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1930.
This day is dedicated to recognize all people who altruistically donate their blood to save other people’s lives or health. And to make everyone aware of the importance of this fact for world health.
The main reason people declare not to donate blood is because no one has asked for it or because they lack information. Blood donors are essential because blood is irreplaceable and cannot be manufactured, so the only way to obtain it is through the voluntary and altruistic donation of people in solidarity. In addition, the blood has an expiration date, hence the importance of the donation being a continuous act since large reserves on time do not guarantee coverage on a regular basis.
Blood is used to treat different types of cancer, in diseases that cause anemia, in medical acts such as organ transplants and surgical interventions. Equally also in the event of accidents, hemorrhages and burns.
In Spain there are around 1,700,000 altruistic blood donations every year for the past 5 years, according to data from the Spanish Federation of Blood Donors. Furthermore, the percentage of active donors is higher in men than in women and in the age range between 31 and 45 years.
Now, in these complicated moments produced by the Covid-19 Pandemic, the blood that has produced antibodies against this disease is more necessary than ever.
Toldos Guardamar wishes to raise awareness of the importance of simply donating blood. With this you are helping to save lives or improve the health of sick people.
#give the best of you
