In April 2017 it was approved at the UN that June 27 was the Day of Microenterprises and Small and Medium Enterprises. These companies, which have a small number of workers (generally less than 250 people) and a moderate turnover, are the backbone of most of the world’s economies and play a role fundamental in developing countries.
According to the data of the International Council for Small Business, this type of business, belong to the formal or informal sector of the economy, represent more than 90 percent of the total number of companies, generate between 60 and 70 percent of employment and are responsible for 50 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) worldwide.
The General Assembly, recognizing the importance of these companies, decided to declare on June 27 the Day of Microenterprises and Small and Medium Enterprises to raise awareness about their contribution to sustainable development.
Promoting the creation of employment.
Since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, all countries have been working towards its implementation, with the aim of ensuring that each actor can contribute in the best possible way. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises have the potential to have a lasting positive impact on global development needs, since they are the engine of economic growth and job creation, representing two of the three new net jobs created worldwide .
Through the promotion of innovation, creativity and decent work for all, these types of companies are key in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
