Since 1992, the International Society for Animal Rights, better known as ISAR for its acronym in English, has promoted the celebration of International Day of Homeless Animals, whose main objective is to provide a solution to the problem of overpopulation of pets found in the street. It is celebrated on August 17.

Among the main activities carried out by organizations around the world that ensure the care and rights of animals, are the following: adoption of pets, vaccination days, castration and sterilization, talks at schools and veterinary clinics, distribution of pamphlets, radio shows, exhibitions, charitable drives and animal blessings.

Main causes that motivate the abandonment of a pet:

1. Financial problems: Many people adopt or acquire a pet, without considering the level of expense and maintenance that comes with having the pet. A pet is as demanding as a baby, animals need to be fed, vaccinated, bathed dewormed, in addition to any other type of treatment or exclusive care of their breed or species.

2. Birth control: This occurs mainly in those owners who have a female of any species, be it a cat or a bitch. The problem here is the owner’s lack of attention and caution. If the pet is not acquired for reproductive purposes, the best thing to do is wait for the second heat to sterilize it and thus avoid the arrival of unexpected litters. But in case you want to remove the baby, the ideal is to leave it locked in a safe area that avoids contact with males of its species.

3. Lack of knowledge of the animal: In this case, the trigger for abandonment is not the expenses associated with having it, but rather how demanding the animal becomes in its daily routine or habits. For example, buying an Angora cat for a child, and then discovering that the little one is allergic to cat hair.

From Toldos Guardamar, through our Care initiative, we want to make you aware that having an animal is a very great responsibility, and that it cannot be just a passing whim. They are sentient beings as much as we are.
