It was in 2000 when the UN General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, inviting governments, international organizations and NGOs to take action on the matter and coordinate activities that raise public awareness regarding the elimination of all forms of violence against women.
Since 1981, militants and activists in favor of women’s rights had November 25 as a day of protest and commemoration against gender violence.
The date was chosen to honor the memory of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the Dominican ruler, Rafael Trujillo.
Violence against women and girls manifests itself in a physical, sexual and psychological way and basically includes the following cases:
• Violence by a romantic partner (physical violence, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide)
• Sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, stalking, street harassment, cyberbullying)
• Trafficking in human beings (slavery, sexual exploitation).
• Genital mutilation.
• Child marriage.
The Spotlight Initiative is a joint campaign of the European Union and the United Nations aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.
The name of the campaign comes from the English word “focus” and it is precisely about giving light to acts of violence against women that in most cases take place in the dark because they refuse and hide, given the shame and stigmatization of victims.
At Toldos Guardamar we want to join this demand to put an end once and for all to this scourge that we have in our society.
