“The world will not be destroyed

for those who do evil,

but for those who see them and do nothing “

Albert Einstein

Toldos Guardamar wants to make an appeal these days where a certain pessimism is perceived for the future of humanity so that this September 26 (International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons) does not go unnoticed. We already have enough problems that there are still enough nuclear weapons in the world to destroy Earth multiple times.

A priority issue.

Achieving nuclear disarmament on a global level is one of the oldest goals of the United Nations. In fact, it was the subject of the first resolution passed by the General Assembly, in 1946, and has been on its agenda since 1959, along with complete general disarmament. It has also been a prominent issue in the Conferences in charge of the examination of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held by the UN since 1975. In the first special session dedicated to disarmament, which took place in 1978, it was given a particular priority to nuclear disarmament. Furthermore, this issue has always had the support of all UN Secretary Generals.

However, today, there are still some 14,000 nuclear weapons. The countries possessing nuclear weapons have long-term programs to modernize their arsenals with an endowment of funds.

More than half of the world’s population still lives in countries that either have these types of weapons or are members of nuclear alliances. Although there have been significant reductions in nuclear weapons deployed since the height of the Cold War, not a single nuclear weapon has been physically destroyed in accordance with any treaty, bilateral or multilateral, and there are no ongoing negotiations on this issue. Meanwhile, the doctrine of nuclear deterrence persists as an element of the security policies of all States that possess this type of weapon and their allies.

At Toldos Guardamar we are in favor of the fact that the world we live in is too magical to be permanently contaminated and threatened with nuclear weapons.
