July 30 is the date chosen for the International Day of Friendship, after a long time changing dates depending on one place or another, the UN proclaimed July 30 as the day of friendship in 2011, on the proposal of the World Friendship Crusade.
In June 1958 a group of friends gathered to celebrate Arbor Day in Puerto Pinasco (Paraguay). It was Dr. Artemio Bracho, then director of the hospital of the Social Welfare Institute in Puerto Pinasco, who proposed the establishment of a day to celebrate friendship between human beings. He thought that since there was a Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Tree Day, how could there not be a day to celebrate Friendship?
That day the international civil organization called World Friendship Crusade was founded, whose motto is “For a better and more humane world”. That same year, 1958, the First Friendship Week was held from July 21 to 27 in Paraguay. Finally, it spread to neighboring countries until finally ending up at the UN as an institutionalized day.
Friendship is such a positive feeling that it has been able to unite very different people, break borders, build ties of solidarity … It is so powerful by its very nature of kindness. Movies and literature abound with stories of friendship in all kinds of contexts. It is one of the most beautiful feelings that exist.
Toldos Guardamar invites everyone to reflect on friendship, and not only this day, but any day of the year. I think that if we learn its true meaning, it will make us better people.
