On July 3, the International Free Day of plastic bags is held to raise awareness of the need to reduce single-use plastic bags and encourage responsible consumption.

The reasons are well known. In a few generations we have gone from our grandmothers used a wicker basket or cart for years to consume more than 200 plastic bags per year per person, representing more than 500 billion bags in the world.

500 billion bags can not evaporate on their own from the face of the earth and the consequences for wildlife, flora, the environment and ourselves are catastrophic.

For this reason, the International Free Day of Plastic Bags and Toldos Guardamar propose the following:

1. Effectively reduce the consumption of single-use bags.
2. Opting for responsible consumption, where the main function of the packaging – the transport of the purchase – is with long-term or reusable systems.
3. Demand that governments order regulations and environmental tax measures to make possible the effective reduction of stock exchanges, and environmental awareness and communication actions, and do not depend on the will of the commercial sector and consumers.
4. Encourage the application of dissuasive measures of the consumption of bags as the incorporation of their environmental cost.
5. Inform so that citizens, municipalities, social entities and the commercial sector bet on this cultural and environmental change, and ask their governments, administrations, commercial sector … to bet on these measures to prevent pollution and waste.
